Major Food, Commercial, Plantation and Horticultural Crops:
Paddy, Sugarcane, Groundnut, Millets, Pulses, etc. are the major crops grown in the district.
Apart from the above crops, Horticultural crops like Cashew, Banana, Tapioca, Guava, Jack fruit, Mango, etc. are grown in various parts of the district. The district is famous for Cashew cultivation as 60% of the States production is accounted for by the district.
10. Profile of one major commodity of the Cuddalore District Paddy.
Paddy is the major crop of the district covering an area of around 1,10,000 Ha. on an average. The average productivity of the crop is 3750 Kg./Ha. The crop is grown in almost all the blocks of the district. Wherever there is assured irrigation facilities, paddy is grown both during Samba and Kuruvai seasons and where the irrigation is dependent on canal water, the crop is grown during Samba only. In delta blocks, viz. Kumaratchi and Kattumannarkoil, rice fallow pulses are also cultivated in the paddy fields.
System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is the latest technology which is widely popularized both by Agriculture Department and Krishi Vigyan Kendra and the farmers are evincing lot of interest in adopting this technology. Paddy cultivation target for the district for the year 2008-09 is set as 122000 Ha. of which SRI would be 47900 Ha. The popular varieties grown are White Ponni, Ponmani (Savithri), ADT.43, ADT.39, BPT 5204 etc. To market the produce there are regulated markets set up at various places in the district. In addition to this, the Tamilnadu Civil Supplies Corporation has set up Direct Procurement Centres at various places, where the SMP is offered to the farmers.
NATIONAL AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME:-
Tamilnadu has got a allocation of Rs.185.31 Crores from Government of India under National Agriculture Development Programme. The details of important projects under the programme are given below:-
|
1. |
Precision farming |
Rs. 63.68 Crores. |
|

Rs. 4.70 |
|
5. |
Facilities for Seed Production, Breeder Seed Production, Training, Back-end subsidy for farmers, Self Help Groups and evaluation / monitoring and field visit |
Rs. 22.25 |
Cuddalore has been identified as a non-focused district for implementation of the programme. Under this programme, it is proposed to take up precision farming in 90 Ha. for sugarcane cultivation, setting up of automatic Weather Station and setting up of Agri Clinics with Mini Testing Labs. (5 units). Annagramam, Kurinjipadi, Keerapalayam, Kattumannarkoil and Kumaratchi blocks have been chosen for implementation of NADP. Under precision farming identified farmers would be provided subsidy of Rs.40,000/- per Ha. for installation of drip irrigation devices. For setting up Agri Clinics, 50% subsidy (Rs.3.00 lakhs) would be provided to each identified beneficiary. The scheme is being implemented in the current year and is expected to continue.
System of Rice Intensification (SRI):
It is a new technology for increasing the rice production, reducing the cost of cultivation and increasing the agricultural income. The advantages are less seed requirement, mat nursery method, young seed transplantation, single seedling in square planting method, water saving upto 50% using conoweeder to plough back the weeds, getting higher tillering which enhances yield and hence high income.
In Cuddalore district, during the year 2007-08, out of the total paddy coverage of 122688 Ha., SRI coverage was 35200 Ha. For the year 2008-09, the paddy coverage target is 122000 Ha. of which SRI coverage would be 47900 ha. To encourage the farmers to go for SRI cultivation, the State Government is providing an incentive of Rs.23000 per hectare which includes Conoweeder and other inputs. Farmers are also provided training on this method by the Agriculture Department as well as by Krishi Vigyan Kendra., Vridhachalam.
Seed Village Scheme:
Seed Village Scheme is under implementation in this district from 2006-07 onwards. The Agriculture Department identifies pockets for better seed production and chooses atleast 50 willing farmers for production of Certified seeds of the same crop in the same area. The identified farmers would be provided foundation / Certified seeds @ 50% cost and also training in different phases to enable them to produce quality seeds.
