SUCCESS STORY OF RENOVATION OF MALAYANUR SUPPLY CHANNEL IN MANGALORE BLOCK
Scheme : Special Components of SGRY -Food for work Programme
Year : 2003 - 04
Estimate : Rs.58,000/-
Due to failure of monsoon for the last two years consecutively in Cuddalore District of Tamil Nadu water supply sources have been severely affected. In most of areas of Cuddalore District water level has
gone down by more than 50 feet. Ordinary small farmers cannot afford to put up deep borewells up to
the water level depth of 300 - 400 feet existing now.
The recharging of water level is hence essential and therefore the Hon'ble Chief Minister have given top priority for the implementation of the Rain Water Harvesting Scheme. The main object of the Rain Water Harvesting is to allow the rain water to percolate into soil and to the under ground water bearing formations and these formations will help to improve water sources with sustainability. By creation of soil and water conservation structures like percolation ponds, check dams, deepening of village tanks, Ooranies, Supply channels rain water is harvested and this enables to increase the water level.
In the continued drought situation the labourers are not getting adequate agricultural labour. To provide employment the Govt. has implemented the "Food for Work Programme". The over all objective of the programme is to provide wage employment within the area they are residing. The effort is to prevent the migration of labourers from the affected villages due to the adverse conditions.
Renovation of Malayanur Supply Channel in Mangalore Block was taken up under the Food for Work Scheme. The Channel was in silted up position for years together and therefore it did not carry rainwater
to its ponds resulting in non receipt of rain water by the ponds.
The Channel was desilted using locally available manual labour. Adequate depth and width were maintained while execution in order to carry sufficient rain water to the pond. The work was executed using locally available agricultural labourers. A total of 978 mandays were generated and 6846 Kg of rice to the value of Rs.38680/- was issued along with a cash component of Rs.14132/-
The desilting of supply channel has shown good results. During the recent rains it has carried the run
off water to the ponds and the ponds are now having water. Due to this, the water level in adjacent wells has risen up by 3 ft to 5 ft. By receiving water, the cultivation has been started. The above work, while providing employment to the agricultural labourers, has simultaneously come up as a good Water Harvesting Structure for augmentation of storage of water. This is a boon for many of the parched areas of Mangalore block.

The wells in the vicinity yielded little or no water during acute summers.
This pond was desalted by employing 110 laborers available locally and in the process, generating 1152 man days. 8064 Kg of rice to the value of Rs. 45562 along with cash component of Rs. 16646 was paid
The work has provided labor to the agricultural laborers. After execution of the work, the tank, which was once empty and dry, is now full of water collected by recent rains and has become a good source for augmenting the ground water. Also the domestic and cattle needs are met through it. The ground level of water in the adjacent open wells is also augmented and simultaneously the water level in the near by hand pumps is raised.
The work executed has gained popularity and has setup an example for successful Rain Water Harvesting. The public now themselves come forward for Rain Water Harvesting structures through partial - public contribution.
